Pilates & Insurance

Pilates Movement Therapy is a powerfully effective and non-invasive therapy for injury clients. Most clients find extreme relief from pain and an overwhelming sense of empowerment while recovering from trauma and injury experienced in automobile and other accidents. Pilates Movement Therapy is often the first and only non-passive therapy a client may experience in their entire healing process. Pilates is often the most permanently effective tool because it addresses and strengthens the body as a cohesive unit. Pilates strengthens core musculature while promoting new neuromuscular patterns. Pilates decompresses the neck and back while addressing deterioration of joint range of motion and muscular flexibility most clients experience from trauma. Oxygenation and circulation of the body all combine in the healing process. Pilates addresses specific site injury while rehabilitating the body to support this process.

Each session is modified to meet the individual needs of the injury client and is continually addressed through the progressive healing process. Most of each therapy session is experienced lying down, kneeling, sitting or in non-stressing postures with continual hands on direction and encouragement by highly qualified and experienced teachers.

These clients experience profound results and progress with consistent one hour sessions done twice weekly. Clients become aware of their bracing patterns and imbalances while developing more insight into dealing with these incorrect patterns and pain issues in their everyday lives. They willingly do “homework” exercises and learn pain-relieving tips to use at home and work in-between sessions.

Pilates utilizes specialized equipment that offers resistance for muscle strengthening while balancing muscular force at the joint. Pilates stimulates circulation while facilitating muscular flexibility, joint range of motion and proper musculoskeletal alignment. New neuromuscular patterns, heightened body awareness and more precise co-ordination and endurance are experienced with consistent decrease in pain levels. Breath-work is integral during the sessions, enabling many clients to quickly become aware of holding patterns, holding their breath, shallow breath to avoid pain and compensatory movement as well. Many clients experience a release of trauma held in the body related to the accident, enabling them to progress more readily. Mild brain injury clients also experience benefits relating to their neuromuscular patterns and body co-ordination. The carefully performed, deeply coordinated movements combine with breath work to forge a quicker healing and reconnection of the brain and body.

Pilates sessions prepare clients before needed surgery relating to injury and are powerfully effective in shortening rehabilitation time after surgery as well. Pilates is a wonderful complement to or after physical therapy and in conjunction with chiropractic, massage therapy, biofeedback, TMJ care and most other therapies related to injury. Many clients come to Pilates at the end of the road after they try everything else but cannot resolve their pain issues. Without exception, they all experience improvement. Pilates is highly effective anytime during the recovery/healing process and can cut rehabilitation time significantly, as well as the number of therapies attended for long periods of time. Many clients state that they have consistent diminished pain and such a steady return to pre-injury status, that they would rather give up other therapies and monetary compensation rather than stop Pilates. When clients return to pre-injury status, Pilates is effective as a preventative to re-injury and may also be used as a fitness routine to maintain their progress.

Insurance Coverage for Automobile Accidents

Insurance Coverage for automobile accidents has dramatically changed for everyone in Colorado. A serious new law that went into effect July 1, 2003 changes Colorado from a "No-Fault" state to a "Tort" state. The most dramatic part of this law is that "Personal Injury Protection" that pays hospitals, therapy and rehabilitation is no longer compulsory and automatic when you buy your policy. Your insurance company will no longer pay reasonable and necessary treatment, emergency or otherwise, for injuries you sustain in an accident unless you specifically purchase coverage known as "med-pay". Even with med-pay, there are limits on amount of treatment covered, type of therapy and time limits to receive therapy.

Previously, everyone was covered under the "No-Fault" system by their own insurance for medical services up to $50,000.00 or more, and for 5-10 years regardless of who caused the accident. Wage loss benefits and essential service benefits which were previously covered for a year, as well, are no longer covered at all.

Lower costs for insurance for the public was the initial idea put forth by the insurance industry regarding how beneficial this new law would be. This is only true because medical treatment for injury isn't covered unless med-pay is purchased, actually increasing insurance costs. The insurance companies offer a wide variety of coverage that can be purchased from $500.00 to $100,000.0 worth of medical care and therapy. The costs and coverage vary greatly company by company. Make sure to check any exclusions or limits to types of therapy your med-pay covers. Also, check how long after your accident therapy is covered and if a pre-approval process is required. Therapy may be limited to 1-3 years instead of the 5-10 years in the old law. Each company is different.

The insurance companies expect to shift the burden of treatment to health insurance carriers. The concept is that health insurance will pay your bills that are no longer covered by your auto policy. Unfortunately, many people and their families, including young children who could be injured, do not have health insurance. Most health insurance plans do not usually cover progressive therapies such as Pilates, massage, Rolfing, yoga, acupuncture, and others that are valuable. Deductibles, co-pays, and long pre-approval processes must be considered even when these therapies are covered. If covered, only short-term therapy is usually approved. Yearly limits on therapy are also important to consider if you plan to rely solely on your health insurance.

Un-insured/under-insured motorist coverage is also important to purchase, as fault based claims are now more likely. The new "tort law" is based on the concept that if one person is at fault for the accident, their insurance company pays for all of the bills on the claim. If the other insurance company will even accept blame, they will not pay medical bills as therapy is received. They pay a lump sum in a settlement at the end of the claim. The person seeking treatment must pay out of their own pocket until then. This in no way guarantees that a settlement will be reached or that it will pay all of the outstanding bills. Some clients have experienced an offer of settlement so low that it does not pay for the medical care. Legally filing a claim with the court through an attorney may bring a higher settlement. However, many attorneys pick and choose clients, as they can only afford to represent those that may receive reasonable settlements, as they usually take 1/3 of the settlement plus costs for their services

This article is meant only as a basic information page and to convey that there are radical changes and many areas to consider when purchasing automobile insurance to cover you in case of an accident. Please use the subjects mentioned to ask your insurance agent about coverage and questions you may have. Contact an attorney specializing in automobile accident claims when needed. Make sure everything you want is in writing in your policy and during a claim for your own protection.
