What is Pilates?

After Joseph H. Pilates’ death in 1967, the Pilates method was named for the work he called Contrology. According to Pilates, “Contrology is the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit. It develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.” Perfecting Contrology became his life's work and he continued to evolve his techniques, developing hundreds of exercises and designing ingenious equipment to strengthen the body's powerhouse (the band of muscles that wrap around the body just below the waist).

A fitness pioneer ahead of his time, Pilates based many of his exercises on yoga movements, while simultaneously coordinating mind, body and spirit through the correct use of muscles and breathing utilizing equipment based on Pilates’ own designs. Pilates is a method of physical conditioning for the entire body and its main focus is on core strength. And encourages the body to work deeply, yet naturally.

The Equipment

Pilates utilizes a variety of apparatus including: Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrel. The equipment uses springs and straps to create various levels of resistance and to control the muscle group you are working. The equipment and movements are designed so that an individual remains in correct form to maximize the best results for the body.
