What is Lymph Drainage Therapy?


lymphLymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) is a method of stimulating your lymph and body fluids. It is a very gentle hands-on procedure that will help you eliminate fluid retention, cleanse your body, and eliminate toxins and trapped proteins in your tissues. It will stimulate your immune system, help you to relax, and release stress and emotional trauma. It has many other positive effects on your body, as well.

In essence, Lymph Drainage Therapy works to help recirculate body fluids, stimulate immune system function and promote a state of relaxation and balance within the autonomic nervous system. It is shown that when these actions are accomplished, the results may be:

  • Reduction in edemas (swelling) and lymphedemas of many origins
  • Detoxification of the body
  • Regeneration of tissues (e.g., from burns and pre- and post-surgical scarring) and anti-aging effects
  • Relief of chronic inflammation and conditions such as acne, eczema and allergies
  • Immune system stimulation for preventative and therapeutic effects
  • Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
  • Relief from chronic pain
  • Deep relaxation to aid insomnia, depression, stress, loss of vitality, and loss of memory
  • Antispastic actions to relieve conditions such as voluntary or involuntary muscle hypertonus
  • Alleviation of adiposis and cellulite tissue


Before Your Session

You are encouraged to tell us if you have any medical conditions, including thyroid problems, high fever or infection, acute heart or kidney conditions, a fresh scar or burn, or if you are menstruating or pregnant. You should also mention if you are wearing contact lenses. For optimal results, and to prepare the system for the cleansing, please drink a lot of water or fresh, natural juice for two to four days preceding a session. At a minimum, eat lightly the day of your initial drainage in order to avoid possible toxic reactions. Raw fruits and raw or steamed vegetables are preferred.


During Your Session

It is not necessary for you to disrobe. Share with us if your back or neck are uncomfortable or if you feel cold. Prepare yourself to relax and be completely cared for ­ this is a special time for you. The therapist will need to concentrate in order to achieve the best results; therefore silence is appreciated during the slow, rhythmic movement of the lymph drainage. During the session, we may ask you to breathe deeply and slowly at various times in order to activate the lymphatic system.

At the End of Your Session

Fifteen minutes of calm and rest before moving will bring the best results. Breaking the rhythm too quickly may hinder the effects of the session and alter the changes made in the autonomic nervous system. Be sure you are steady before driving. It is very important for you to drink as much as possible to help flush out the toxins.

Possible Post-Session Reactions

You might experience some detoxification reactions in the two to six days following the sessions, depending on the amount of toxins present in the body. Common reactions:

  • Sluggishness, nausea, muscle aches, pain, tiredness. If these don’t last, they usually indicate the release of toxins.
  • You may urinate more often and/or in greater quantity. The urine may be very concentrated at the beginning and very clear after a while. There may be a strong odor.
  • You may feel a pleasant tiredness and sleep more. Afterwards you may feel very fresh and alert. By contrast, you may not want to sleep. You may feel so energized that you will stay awake late and won’t be tired in the morning.
  • Some bones can spontaneously readjust.
  • You may experience improved memory; improved sense of taste; better smell; improved visual perception of distance and color.
  • Acute signs or fever can specifically be signs of detoxification reactions; these should not stay more than two or three days.
